Italian teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli has etched his name into the Formula One history books after becoming the youngest pole position holder in the sport’s history following a stunning qualifying performance at the Chinese Grand Prix.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver delivered a sensational lap during qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit.
He secured the top spot on the starting grid and broke a long-standing record previously held by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.
Antonelli’s achievement marks a major milestone for the young driver and also for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
By claiming pole position in China, Antonelli became the youngest driver ever to start a Formula One race from pole, achieving the feat at just 19 years old.
The record had stood for nearly two decades after Vettel set it at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix while driving for Toro Rosso at age 21.
The young Italian was fast-tracked through the Mercedes junior programme and given a full-time race seat after seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton made a high-profile move to Scuderia Ferrari.
The qualifying session at the Chinese Grand Prix saw Antonelli outperform several experienced drivers on the grid.
He secured the fastest lap of the session ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, giving the team a valuable front-row lockout for the race.
Before entering Formula One, Antonelli dominated several junior racing categories and quickly caught the attention of top teams.
His rapid progression through the ranks earned him a place in Mercedes’ development programme, where he was groomed as a future star.
Many experts have compared his rise to some of the sport’s most successful young drivers, noting his natural speed, calm demeanor, and ability to handle pressure on the biggest stages.
Following the historic qualifying session, several figures within the sport praised Antonelli’s performance.
Mercedes team leadership has also consistently backed Antonelli, describing him as one of the most talented young drivers they have seen in recent years.
