KISII, Kenya — Two people have died, and seven others sustained injuries after a trailer rammed into several boda boda riders at Kegati along the busy Kisii–Keroka Road, authorities and witnesses said.
The crash occurred on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the trading centre and forcing emergency responders to rush the injured to nearby health facilities.
Preliminary reports indicate that the trailer lost control before ploughing into a group of motorcycle riders who were operating along the roadside, killing two riders on the spot. Several others suffered serious injuries.
Local residents and first responders quickly mobilized to rescue victims trapped beneath damaged motorcycles and debris. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals in Kisii County for treatment.
Police officers from the area confirmed the incident and said investigations had begun to establish the exact cause of the crash.
The accident briefly disrupted traffic along the Kisii–Keroka Road, a key transport corridor linking Kisii town to Keroka and parts of Nyamira County. Motorists were forced to slow down as police and residents cleared wreckage from the road.
Witnesses said the impact scattered motorcycles across the road, leaving bystanders scrambling to assist the victims before emergency services arrived.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety in the region, particularly the vulnerability of motorcycle riders who operate in large numbers along major highways.
Authorities have repeatedly urged both riders and drivers of heavy commercial vehicles to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution on busy highways.
Road safety experts say many accidents involving motorcycles occur due to speeding, reckless overtaking, poor visibility, and failure by motorists to maintain safe distances.
Local leaders in Kisii County called on drivers of heavy trucks and trailers to remain vigilant, especially in areas with high motorcycle traffic.
Authorities have urged road users to remain cautious while traveling along the Kisii–Keroka Road as investigations continue.
The crash adds to the growing list of fatal road accidents reported across the country in recent months, intensifying calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety awareness among motorists.
