NAIVASHA, Kenya — Nine people have died following a collision between a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff bus and a Kenya Railways cargo train near the Morendat Training and Conference Centre (MTCC) in Naivasha.
The Thursday afternoon crash occurred as the bus, carrying 32 employees finishing a morning shift, crossed the railway line and was struck by the train.
KPC and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum confirmed that the dead include four KPC employees based at MTCC and five staff from a contracted cleaning company.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Ministry… announces the passing of nine people… in a tragic road accident,” the Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban, KPC Managing Director Joe Sang, and company director Mohammed Birik visited the crash scene and later met survivors in hospital.
“We have lost dedicated members of our family who served their country with commitment and honour,” PS Liban told reporters.
Several injured survivors are receiving treatment in hospitals in Naivasha and Nairobi, with some awaiting surgery.
One patient at Kijabe Hospital is in stable condition with manageable fractures.
KPC praised the swift response of first responders, medical teams, and staff, highlighting the efforts of Julius Alolo, a local employee who was among the first to help victims at the scene.
The Ministry also thanked members of the public who assisted in rescue and evacuation efforts.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. Authorities have urged the public to keep away from the site to allow emergency crews to work.
The names of the victims will be released once their families are informed. KPC officials remain in Naivasha to coordinate the company’s response and support for affected families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected families,” KPC said. “We will continue to extend the necessary support during this difficult time.”
