21 Killed in Kisumu Crash Involving AIC Naki High School Bus

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya — At least 21 people have died after a bus belonging to AIC Naki High School was involved in a horrific crash at the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu on Friday evening.

Police said the vehicle was not carrying students at the time of the accident. The victims include 10 women, 10 men and a 10-year-old girl.

According to Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina, the bus was travelling from Kakamega towards Kisumu when the driver lost control shortly before 5 p.m.

“The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle as it approached the Coptic Roundabout, crossed over to the opposite lane heading back to Kakamega, and plunged into a ditch,” Maina told reporters.

Five people sustained serious injuries, while 15 others — including a minor — were treated for minor injuries.

All the injured are admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu.

The purpose of the trip and the identities of those on board are still under investigation.

Police say mechanical experts will inspect the bus to determine whether a technical fault caused the crash.

The tragedy has renewed calls for tighter safety regulations, particularly over the use of school-owned buses for non-school activities.

Police have cordoned off the crash site as investigations continue.
