NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has dismissed claims of an alleged plan to overthrow the government, accusing the current administration of using fear tactics to distract from real leadership failures.
Speaking during a live interview on Kameme TV on Monday, July 14, Dr. Matiang’i said allegations that Gen Z protesters had plotted to invade State House were nothing more than unfounded rumors.
“Even if people say they want to invade State House, it cannot be equated to an attempt against the government,” he said. “This is part of a circus of excuses by leaders who are failing in their mandate.”
Leadership Crisis, Not Treason
Matiang’i urged the government to stop scapegoating and instead confront the country’s mounting challenges head-on.
“We need to speak the truth. Kenya is facing serious leadership issues. Instead of addressing these, the government is resorting to claims that certain tribes or groups are plotting destabilisation. That’s politics of excuses,” he said.
His comments come amid rising political tension following weeks of anti-government protests, many led by young Kenyans frustrated over economic conditions and stalled reforms.
Government Knows Who’s Behind the Chaos
Matiang’i also claimed that some of the violence witnessed during the recent unrest was orchestrated from within the government itself, suggesting state operatives may be involved in inciting chaos to discredit peaceful protests.
“I was Interior Minister for five years—I understand how the government works. It’s not believable that the State doesn’t know who’s sponsoring the goons causing chaos,” he said. “This is a government with a long arm. Where has it gone now?”
He warned against blame games between the opposition and ruling alliance, calling for accountability and decisive leadership.
“You can’t have both sides—government and opposition—accusing each other of sponsoring thugs. Someone must take responsibility,” Matiang’i added.
