Nairobi, Kenya- Fred Matiang’i has left Kenya just weeks after shaking up the political scene with a bold declaration: he’s running for president in 2027.
His destination? Washington, D.C.—where he’s expected to formally resign from his role at the World Bank before returning to take on the country’s highest political seat.
During a high-energy rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, Matiang’i told a crowd of thousands, “I am ready to be President of Kenya.” His announcement electrified supporters and revived conversations within the opposition camp.

The former Interior CS has since emerged as a central figure in a growing political alliance with Deputy President-turned-opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua. Their partnership has stirred hopes of a united front against the ruling coalition.
In the weeks following his homecoming, Matiang’i’s name gained traction across party lines. The Jubilee Party publicly offered him its 2027 presidential ticket, promising to lead a vigorous campaign to support his ambitions.
But shortly after the momentum picked up, he boarded a flight out of the country.
“You have asked me to come and serve this country. Do you want me to leave that job and come back to serve you? I will now resign officially, with respect, and come back to Kenya to serve my country,” he said at the Gusii rally.
According to reports, the job he’s referring to is his position at the World Bank, where he’s served quietly since leaving government.
Matiang’i is expected to be abroad for “a few months,” after which he plans to return and resume full-time campaigning.
Jubilee, on the other hand, remains confident he’ll accept their ticket. Whichever path he chooses, his return will be closely watched.
For now, Matiang’i remains abroad, but his political fire is still burning at home.
