NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is set to make a highly anticipated return to Kenya, with his close allies planning a grand homecoming event in what is widely seen as the launchpad for his 2027 presidential bid.
Sources within his political camp indicate that preparations are already underway for the event, tentatively scheduled for May.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, a key strategist in Matiang’i’s circle, confirmed the plans, hinting at a political comeback that could reshape the country’s presidential race.
“Fred Matiang’i will soon be with us—it’s only a matter of days. His many supporters across the country are excited and are planning a grand reception for him upon his return,” Onyonka stated.
Matiang’i’s homecoming is expected to serve as a defining moment for his political ambitions, with his allies mobilizing national support through a network of committees.
These groups, based in major cities such as Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Mombasa, and Wajir, are coordinating efforts to ensure a large-scale turnout for the event.
The former CS’s re-emergence on the political scene comes amid speculation about his potential face-off against President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
His return could also impact the political calculations of other potential candidates, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, whose rumoured bid may now face pressure from Matiang’i’s growing support base.
A national coordinating committee, whose details remain closely guarded, is overseeing the homecoming preparations, while regional caucuses have been mobilizing grassroots support.
Former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara confirmed that discussions are ongoing to solidify Matiang’i’s political vehicle.
“At the moment, we are building momentum through consultations to identify a political vehicle for his bid. Several parties have already expressed interest in supporting him,” Magara noted.
Among the political outfits positioning themselves to back Matiang’i is the former ruling Jubilee Party, associated with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Additionally, a coalition of parties from Kisii and Nyamira counties, dubbed the Taifa Alliance, is working to consolidate Abagusii community support behind his candidacy.
Upon his return, Matiang’i is expected to embark on a nationwide grassroots engagement tour before officially unveiling his presidential bid.
The homecoming event itself is anticipated to be a spectacle, beginning with a grand reception at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, followed by a procession through Nairobi’s Central Business District and culminating in a major rally.
Matiang’i’s allies have drawn parallels between his anticipated reception and the historic 1990s homecoming of pro-democracy leader Kenneth Matiba.
Political analysts view this as a calculated move to signal his intent to mount a formidable challenge in the next general election.
