Mbeere North By-Election: Uhuru’s Jubilee Party Throws Weight Behind Opposition

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Jubilee Party, led by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, has announced it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North parliamentary by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025.

Instead, the party says it will rally behind the joint candidate agreed upon by the opposition coalition.

Pauline Njoroge, Jubilee’s Deputy Organizing Secretary, clarified the party’s position on Friday, dismissing reports that it had issued nomination papers to any aspirant.

“As the Deputy Organizing Secretary of the Jubilee Party, I wish to set the record straight. The National Executive Council (NEC), which is chaired by H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, has not issued nomination papers to any aspirant for the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election,” she said in a statement.

She added: “The Jubilee Party will not be fielding a candidate in this race. Instead, we will stand firmly behind the joint opposition candidate. Take this to the bank, and treat all other claims as pure hearsay.”

The announcement comes just days after the Rigathi Gachagua-led Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) also withdrew from the contest, declaring support for the Democratic Party (DP)’s nominee.

On the other hand, the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has settled on Leonard Muriuki, popularly known as Leo, to carry its flag in the by-election.

The Mbeere North parliamentary seat fell vacant following the appointment of Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.
