MOMBASA, Kenya — Kenya Shipyards Limited has confirmed the successful repair of the radar system aboard MV Ikraam I, marking a key technical milestone at the Mombasa Shipyard.
In a progress update shared Monday, the company said its navigation and communication technicians repaired the radar up-mast power board for the vessel’s transceiver unit.
Following testing, the system was confirmed to be fully operational.
“The system, having been tested, is now functioning effectively, restoring full radar transmission and reception capability,” Kenya Shipyards stated.
Restored Operational Capability
The repaired transceiver unit ensures reliable signal transmission and accurate target detection. Radar systems are critical for vessel navigation, particularly in congested sea lanes and during low-visibility conditions.
By restoring full functionality, the vessel regains enhanced operational safety and navigational efficiency.
Key Benefits Highlighted
Kenya Shipyards outlined several benefits resulting from the repair:
- Enhanced situational awareness
- Improved collision avoidance capability
- Strengthened maritime safety
Maritime experts note that radar transceivers play a central role in detecting nearby vessels, landmasses, and potential hazards, reducing the risk of accidents at sea.

Boost to Local Technical Capacity
The successful repair underscores the growing technical capacity at the Mombasa Shipyard. Kenya Shipyards has increasingly positioned itself as a regional hub for marine engineering, maintenance, and refurbishment services.
Industry stakeholders say such in-house repairs reduce downtime, lower operational costs, and enhance the reliability of Kenya’s maritime fleet.
