Nairobi CBD Boda Boda Riders Deny Links with Hired Goons During Anti-Police Brutality Protests

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Boda boda riders operating within Nairobi’s Central Business District have distanced themselves from a group of violent impostors accused of unleashing chaos during recent protests against police brutality.

In a statement issued, the Nairobi CBD Riders Association condemned the actions of the rogue group — identified as “Goon-Z” — which it says infiltrated peaceful demonstrations following the death of 30-year-old teacher Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

“These goons, under the guise of protecting businesses, became the very force that destroyed them,” the association said, accusing the gang of attacking civilians, looting shops, and vandalizing property while disguised as legitimate riders.

The riders further claimed that some members of the security forces either turned a blind eye to the violence or actively participated in looting.

They demanded accountability and a thorough investigation into the alleged collusion between state actors and the criminals.

“We wish to make it absolutely clear: we, the bona fide Nairobi CBD Riders, have no association with these criminals,” the group said, describing themselves as “responsible citizens who work hard every day to earn a living with dignity.”

The association also took issue with what they described as the unilateral decision by authorities to involve external elements in managing security within the city center.

In a pointed appeal to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja — referred to as their patron — the riders asked for clarity over the role of hired groups in what they described as an intrusion into their daily operations.

“To our patron, Governor Johnson Sakaja, we respectfully request clarification on the decision to engage external groups in matters that affect our operations,” the statement read.

The riders vowed to resist any further infiltration by rogue actors and to take responsibility for maintaining order within their space.

“Let it be known that any such intrusion will be repulsed decisively. We are ready to defend our space and our reputation,” they said.

The group concluded by urging peace, justice, and the protection of all citizens’ rights “without fear or favor.”
