Governor Sakaja Expands Free Parking to Saturdays in Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Motorists in Nairobi can now enjoy free parking on Saturdays, a new directive from Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration, easing the burden on residents and boosting weekend activities in the city.

Previously, free parking was only available on Sundays.

Announcing the change, Governor Sakaja said, “Yes, indeed, parking is free on Saturdays. You can come to town, park your car, and not pay anything.”

This policy shift, aimed at providing relief to Nairobi residents, is part of a broader strategy to maximize revenue collection during weekdays while offering free parking over the weekends.

This latest move builds on a temporary exemption introduced last year, which waived Saturday parking fees until June 30, 2024, under the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act.

Finance CEC Charles Kerich noted that the decision aligns with efforts to enhance the quality of life in Nairobi, saying, “It aligns with the governor’s broader efforts to enhance the quality of life for Nairobians as well as build a supportive community.”

The policy has been welcomed by residents and businesses alike, who see it as a way to stimulate local commerce.

Moreover, the Nairobi City County Government has extended its support to the creative community by allowing content creators to shoot videos and take photos free of charge over the weekends.

Governor Sakaja emphasized that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to make Nairobi more livable and accessible, with significant benefits expected for small business owners operating in the Central Business District.
