NAIROBI, Kenya — Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has been cleared of a hate speech case after fully complying with court directives and engaging in peace initiatives, Milimani Magistrate’s Court has ruled.
Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai noted that Salasya had actively participated in peace campaigns reaching over 1,000 people, including sustained initiatives on social media.
The MP had also committed to maintaining these efforts, prompting the withdrawal of the charges.
The case, initially filed on May 19, 2025, accused Salasya of making inflammatory social media remarks targeting a specific community.
The matter was referred to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), which, in collaboration with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), proposed an out-of-court settlement focused on reconciliation, peace, and social cohesion rather than prosecution.
Prosecution counsel Nora Achieng told the court that the withdrawal followed an agreement between Salasya and NCIC.
The court had earlier required the MP to issue a public apology and actively participate in peace campaigns before terminating proceedings.

Magistrate Mutai affirmed, “The evidence placed before the court shows that the accused has complied with the conditions imposed. The peace initiative is continuous, and the legislator has committed himself to sustaining it.”
With the withdrawal, the case formally concludes, marking a resolution aimed at promoting national cohesion and social harmony.
