President Ruto Calls Gusii Leaders for State House Talks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto will on Friday morning meet a delegation of leaders from the Gusii community at State House, Nairobi, in talks expected to focus on development projects for the region.

According to invitations sent out to selected leaders, the breakfast meeting will bring together elected officials and professionals from Kisii and Nyamira counties.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Broadcasting Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke will lead the team of technocrats, with some members travelling from the two counties for the event.

The political wing of the delegation is expected to include National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, UDA Treasurer Japhet Nyakundi, and Bomachoge Chache MP Alpha Miruka, who held a planning session in Nairobi on Wednesday ahead of the meeting.

“You are kindly invited to a breakfast meeting with President William Ruto to be held at State House on Friday, 15th August, from 7 a.m. The agenda will be to discuss development programmes for our community,” part of the invitation reads.

The talks come against the backdrop of growing political restiveness in the Gusii region, where former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been gaining traction as he eyes a presidential run.

Some local leaders, including UDA’s North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, have publicly endorsed Dr. Matiang’i, signalling a brewing contest for influence in the region.

The meeting also precedes three ward by-elections in Nyamira County scheduled for 27 November 2025.

The polls will be held in Nyansiongo (Borabu Constituency), Dr. Matiang’i’s birthplace, Ekerenyo (North Mugirango), and Nyamaiya (West Mugirango), contests that could further test political alignments in the area.

While the official agenda is development-focused, observers view the meeting as part of President Ruto’s broader strategy to consolidate support in regions seen as leaning toward his potential 2027 rivals.
