NAIROBI, Kenya- The family of former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga has released an emotional message thanking Kenyans and world leaders for the support they received during his burial, as they marked what would have been his 81st birthday on Tuesday, January 7.
In a statement, the Odinga family described the day as both reflective and painful, coming just weeks after the passing of the long-time opposition figure popularly known as Baba.
“The Odinga Family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stood with us during this profoundly painful time following the passing of our beloved Baba Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga,” the statement read.
The family singled out President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and the entire government for what they termed as outstanding support, understanding, and kindness during the mourning period.
They also thanked the various funeral committees that coordinated what they described as a dignified and well-organised send-off for the veteran statesman.
Special appreciation was extended to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for facilitating the swift repatriation of Raila Odinga’s body from India, where he died.
At the time of his passing, Odinga was accorded full military honours in India, a gesture the family said demonstrated the respect he commanded beyond Kenya’s borders.
The family acknowledged condolences and physical presence from former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), Nana Akufo-Addo (Ghana), Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania), and Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.
They noted that several heads of state who were unable to attend the burial still sent emissaries, a gesture they said meant a great deal to them.
Appreciation was also extended to the diplomatic community, governors, and county assemblies, with special mention of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Siaya Governor James Orengo for ensuring smooth transit and logistical arrangements.
The family further thanked Kenya Defence Forces Chief General Charles Muriu Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and members of both Houses of Parliament for coordinating funeral events.
Special recognition was given to the medical team led by Dr David Oluoch-Olunya, Dr Martin Wanyoike, Dr Eva Njenga, Dr Robin Mogere, and Dr Abdul Msaddi, alongside medical staff in both India and Kenya.
The family also praised local and international media houses for what they described as professional and dedicated coverage of Odinga’s life and final journey, while acknowledging ODM Party members and staff who stood by him throughout his political career.
“We cherish all the messages of support, love, and kindness. It brings us peace to know how deeply Baba touched the lives of many, here and beyond,” the statement concluded.
