Ruto: AI is the New Weapon Against Africa’s Security Threats

NAIROBI,Kenya,May 19— President William Ruto has emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in safeguarding national and regional security, calling for scaled up collaboration among African intelligence agencies to harness the power of this emerging technology.

Ruto, who spoke following a meeting with South Africa’s Director-General of the State Security Agency, Gloria Nozuko Bam, at State House, Nairobi, underscored the importance of AI in predicting and preventing threats that could undermine the continent’s socio-economic stability.

“Artificial intelligence has become a critical tool in keeping our countries safe and predicting threats that could destroy our socio-economic fabric,” he stated.

Kenya and South Africa will deepen cooperation in intelligence sharing and technological advancement within the security sector.

Likewise, the head of state stressed the importance of continental unity in leveraging AI, urging intelligence agencies across Africa to work collaboratively to stay ahead of evolving security challenges.

Kenya had earlier embarked on a digital transformation journey in an array of areas, including the cybersecurity sector.

In January, the government introduced its inaugural National Artificial Intelligence Strategy anchored on an array of sectors, including innovation-driven AI adaptation.
