Musician Samuel Muchoki, better known as Samidoh, has dismissed claims that his late nephew, designer Jeff Mwathi, died by suicide, telling a Nairobi court that he only wants the truth about what happened.
Testifying on Monday, Samidoh said he had known Mwathi since childhood and described him as a creative who designed and sold clothes.
He told the court that Mwathi’s death in February 2023 was suspicious and that the first postmortem report left many questions unanswered.
“I only want to know how my nephew died,” he said, adding that the body’s condition and the state of the room did not support a suicide theory.
The musician also revealed that he and DJ Fatxo — the entertainer at the centre of the case — hail from Nyandarua County and that he had mentored the DJ musically.
He dismissed speculation that their relationship was politically motivated or that he had sought to harm Fatxo’s career.
“DJ Fatxo was my mentee. I supported him musically and had no mission to destroy him,” Samidoh told the court.
Disputing the suicide narrative
On the day of the incident, Samidoh said he reported the matter to Kasarani Police Station at 8 am, with DJ Fatxo arriving three hours later.
He criticized the handling of the crime scene, saying it was not secured and that several people were already present when police arrived.
According to his testimony, CCTV footage showed Mwathi’s body falling from a height between 5 am and 6 am on February 23, 2023.
He also said the footage captured DJ Fatxo leaving with three women, none of whom was Mwathi’s girlfriend, without the deceased.
Samidoh added that when he viewed the body during a second postmortem — which he sought with support from other artists — it was already dressed but had no shoes, trousers half-worn, and underwear around the ankles. He said he was dissatisfied with the first autopsy’s findings.
He further questioned why the bed near the window from which Mwathi allegedly fell was still neatly made, with no signs of disturbance or footmarks on the window.
“If he had jumped, the bed would have been displaced,” Samidoh told the court.
The inquest into Mwathi’s death is ongoing.
