Senator Methu Pressures Raila to Declare Political Stand After AU Bid Loss

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Nyandarua Senator John Methu has challenged former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to publicly clarify his political stance following his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Speaking on Thursday during the unveiling of the rebranded People’s Liberation Party (PLP) in Nairobi, Methu urged Raila to decide whether he would align with the government or the opposition.

“To former Prime Minister Raila Odinga—show us the signal so that we know whether you are with the government or with us. If you are joining the government or the opposition, say it early. The time is now,” Methu said at the event, which was led by former Justice Minister Martha Karua.

Raila, who recently met with President William Ruto to discuss national matters, has remained non-committal about his next steps.

Following his defeat in the AUC race, he has embarked on a nationwide consultation tour, engaging political allies and grassroots leaders.

On Tuesday, while addressing elders and youth leaders in Kisumu, the ODM leader acknowledged his AU setback but assured his supporters that he is actively strategizing for the future.

“The AU chapter is now behind me. It is time to move forward,” Raila said, adding that he would consult widely beyond his Nyanza stronghold before making a major announcement.

He promised to make his stance clear by next week after concluding his consultative meetings across the country.

Methu’s remarks come at a time of heightened political realignments, with Raila’s future direction under intense scrutiny.

His meeting with President Ruto has fueled speculation about a potential working relationship with the government, even as opposition figures urge him to remain steadfast in his watchdog role.
