Somali Ambassador Slams Fans Who Disrespected Kenyan Flag During Nyayo Stadium Match

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, has condemned the actions of individuals filmed desecrating the Kenyan flag during a continental football match in Nairobi, calling the incident “regrettable” and unrepresentative of relations between the two nations.

The incident occurred on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium during a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary tie in which Kenya Police FC defeated Mogadishu City Club 3–1.

Viral videos showed some fans, believed to be Somali youth, stepping on Kenyan flags inside the stadium — a move that sparked outrage both online and offline.

Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, Ambassador Abdulle distanced his country from the incident, stressing that Somalia values its friendship with Kenya.

“We regret and firmly condemn the actions of a few individuals whose behaviour has overshadowed the remarkable performances of both teams,” Abdulle said. “Such incidents do not reflect the values of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that guide the relationship between the two countries.”

The envoy further revealed that authorities are investigating the matter, signaling possible disciplinary measures against those involved.

The incident has provoked strong reactions from Kenyans, many of whom demanded swift action, arguing that disrespecting the national flag amounts to insulting the nation.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also weighed in, reminding the public that desecrating national symbols is a punishable offense under the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act.

“Many people don’t know that there is the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act. I urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure the law takes its course,” Murkomen said while speaking in Wajir during the 45th Jukwaa la Usalama forum.

The Act regulates the use and protection of national symbols, including the flag, emblems, and names, prescribing penalties for misuse or desecration.

Despite the controversy, both teams’ performances on the pitch were hailed as commendable, with Police FC taking the first-leg advantage ahead of the return fixture in Mogadishu.
