Sophia Sitati Appointed Acting Registrar of Political Parties as Ann Nderitu Joins IEBC

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has announced the appointment of Sophia Sitati as the Acting Registrar, effective July 14, 2025, following the departure of Ann Nderitu, who was sworn in this week as a commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Sitati, who previously served as Chief State Counsel in the State Department for Justice and Constitutional Affairs under the Office of the Attorney General, has been seconded to the ORPP to lead the institution in advancing political accountability and democratic governance.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ORPP said Sitati brings a “wealth of expertise and experience as a seasoned legal practitioner, having served in various portfolios in Government.”

She was formally briefed by outgoing Registrar Ann Nderitu during a handover meeting held on July 15 at the ORPP headquarters in Nairobi. Sitati also met with members of the management team and staff.

Nderitu, who served as Registrar for seven years, is credited with building a solid institutional foundation for the ORPP.

According to the agency, her leadership spearheaded reforms in human capital development, legal and ICT frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and capacity-building for political party officials, including targeted support for Special Interest Groups.

“These initiatives have led to effective execution of the Office mandate and progressed democratic governance in Kenya,” the statement read.

Under her tenure, the ORPP also gained recognition from regional and international counterparts as a benchmark institution in political party regulation and oversight.

Sitati now takes over the helm of the ORPP as it continues its mandate of registering, funding, and supervising political parties in Kenya—an increasingly critical role as the country gears up for the 2027 general election.
