Ukraine Seeks Academic Ties With Kenyatta University

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Ukraine has identified Kenyatta University (KU) as a key partner for strategic academic collaboration, signalling growing education and research ties between the two countries.

The move followed a high-level visit by the Ukrainian Ambassador to the university, aimed at exploring partnerships in student exchange programmes, joint research, and academic cooperation across sectors, including agriculture, medicine, tourism, and other strategic fields.

The engagement was chaired by Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Okumu, who framed the discussions within a broader international relations and education diplomacy context, highlighting the role of universities as bridges between nations.

According to Kenyatta University, the talks underscored shared historical experiences, resilience, and the growing importance of academic institutions in fostering people-to-people relations and long-term cooperation beyond formal state diplomacy.

University officials said the proposed collaboration would focus on knowledge exchange, research innovation, and youth mobility, positioning higher education as a strategic tool in strengthening bilateral relations.

During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation indicated that several universities in Ukraine are establishing specialised faculties tailored for African students, a move aimed at expanding access to higher education and strengthening academic integration with the continent.

The discussions come amid a broader push by Kenyan universities to internationalise academic programmes, attract global research partnerships, and expand opportunities for Kenyan students abroad.
