“What About GenZ Mothers?”: First Lady Rachael Ruto’s Mother’s Day Tribute Met With Grief and Outcry

Date:

First Lady Rachael Ruto marked Mother’s Day with an emotional tribute celebrating the unwavering spirit of mothers across the country.

Her message, shared across her official social media platforms, praised the sacrificial love of mothers, quoting the Bible: “Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

“A mother’s world is beautifully intertwined with the well-being of her children; every smile, tear, and victory echoes in her soul,” read part of her message.

“To all the mothers who give so selflessly, may you feel the boundless gratitude and admiration you so deeply deserve.”

While the message resonated with many, it also drew strong responses from a section of Kenyans who used the post to highlight the grief of mothers whose children died during the June 25, 2024 protests—part of a wave of anti-government demonstrations largely led by Gen Z.

Several social media users on X expressed that Mother’s Day was particularly painful this year for families who lost their loved ones, demanding justice and government accountability.

Others raised broader concerns about the high cost of living and youth unemployment, urging the First Lady to use her influence to advocate for meaningful change.

“Your words are beautiful, Mama Rachel, but many mothers are still crying for justice,” one wrote.

“We need more than prayers—we need answers.”
