NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s ambitions for its flagship smart city just took a decisive turn toward artificial intelligence.
The Konza Technopolis Development Authority has formally partnered with AUI Global to introduce a wide-ranging AI capacity-building programme designed to equip leadership teams with the skills needed to govern, deploy, and scale AI responsibly.
The collaboration, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding, positions AI not as a buzzword within Konza Technopolis — but as an operational capability embedded at the highest levels of decision-making.
What the Partnership Delivers
Under the agreement, AUI Global will roll out:
- Specialised AI workshops for KoTDA board members and staff
- ISO 17024–certified executive AI programmes tailored to governance and leadership roles
The training won’t stop at the public sector. Private companies operating within Konza Technopolis will also be able to enroll their teams, extending the impact across the wider innovation ecosystem.
The goal is clear: close the gap between knowing what AI is and knowing how to deploy it strategically.
From Awareness to Accountability
According to KoTDA, the programme is designed to help leadership teams oversee AI adoption in ways that are ethical, accountable, and aligned with Kenya’s broader digital and economic priorities.
Rather than focusing solely on technical skills, the curriculum will emphasise governance, risk oversight, and responsible integration — areas where many AI initiatives falter.
In effect, Konza is betting that AI-literate leadership is just as important as AI talent.
AUI Global’s East Africa Play
For AUI Global, the agreement marks a major step in its East African expansion.
Deborah Bartlett, Executive Lead at the organisation, described the partnership as a natural fit with Kenya’s growing role in Africa’s tech landscape.
“Partnering with Konza Technopolis allows AUI Global to deepen our roots in the Silicon Savannah,” Bartlett said.
“Together, we will accelerate AI adoption and literacy in Kenya, ensuring that Kenya’s leaders are certified in AI to responsibly integrate AI to transform businesses and society.”
The move reinforces AUI Global’s strategy of targeting leadership and governance layers — not just developers — as AI reshapes economies.
Strengthening Kenya’s Knowledge Economy
For Konza Technopolis, the collaboration is about positioning.
CEO John Paul Okwiri said embedding AI literacy at leadership level strengthens Kenya’s competitiveness in a rapidly digitising global economy.
“By teaming up with AUI Global, we are supporting Kenyan companies to achieve and maintain AI dominance,” Okwiri said.
“This captures the inspiration behind our vision to be a global Technopolis spurring Kenya’s future through innovation and growing the knowledge economy.”
By aligning education, governance, and innovation, Konza hopes to attract deeper global investment while enabling local enterprises to scale in a high-tech environment.
A Model for Africa’s Smart Cities
As smart cities across Africa search for ways to turn digital ambition into practical outcomes, the Konza–AUI Global partnership offers a blueprint: invest early in leadership capability, not just infrastructure.
In an era where AI is moving faster than regulation, Konza’s approach suggests that the smartest cities may be those that teach their leaders how to ask the right questions — before deploying the technology.
