An International Driving License (IDL) also known as the International Driving Permit (IDP) is a legal travel document that enables you to drive in many foreign countries.
It clarifies that you hold a valid driver’s license in your country of origin.
It is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries and contains your name, photo, and driver information in the 12 most spoken languages globally.
It is directed by the United Nations Conventions on International Road Traffic.
How to Apply for an International Driving Permit
- Download the IDP application form from AA Kenya
- Complete the form and ensure the details match with your valid driver’s license.
- Attach a copy of your valid driver’s license and a passport-sized photo.
- Process the payment and drop the forms at the closest AA branch that meets your preference.
The costs of acquiring an IDP are as follows;
- 1-year permit for citizens at Sh 3,480 and Sh 6,480 for non-citizens.
- 2-years permit at Sh 8,916 for citizens and Sh 11,916 for non-citizens.
- 3-years permit Sh 12,960 for citizens and 15,960 for non-citizens.
Requirements
- An original valid driving license.
- An original copy of national ID.
- Two recent passport-size photographs.
- Correctly filled form VII obtained from the District Commissioners’ offices or Road Transport Department offices.
- Applicants must undergo a driving test examination conducted by driving test examiners.
- Successful applicants must be issued with a Drivers Certificate of Competency countersigned in connection to the class in which the test was taken.
- The applicant must be over 18 years old for a motor vehicle driving license.
- For a motorcycle license, the applicant must be over 16 years old.
- Applicants must pay the prescribed fee at the offices where the application was done.
- While waiting for the actual driving license, the applicants must be issued with an interim driving license
