The honorary degree will be awarded at the University’s 13th Graduation Ceremony on November 21, 2024.
Kipyegon, a globally acclaimed middle- and long-distance runner, has made history by becoming the first woman to secure three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1,500 meters.
Known for her endurance and competitive spirit, Kipyegon also holds the world records for both the 1,500 meters and the mile, feats achieved during the 2023 season in just 49 days.
“Kipyegon is an embodiment of resilience and excellence, consistently pushing the boundaries of athletic achievement. Her remarkable journey continues to inspire countless athletes around the world,” read the University of Eldoret’s statement on Friday.
The 2024 season further cemented Kipyegon’s legacy, as she won her third Olympic gold in the 1,500 meters and added new records to her name. Her accomplishments, however, were not without drama.
During the 5,000-meter Olympic race, Kipyegon was briefly disqualified following a collision with Ethiopian world record holder Gudaf Tsegay, a decision that sparked considerable outcry.
A successful appeal by Kenyan officials led to the restoration of her silver medal, rounding off a memorable season.
Beginning the year as the reigning world champion in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, Kipyegon faced initial challenges after a delayed season start due to injury.
However, she dispelled any doubts about her form at the National Olympic trials in June, winning the 5,000 meters in an impressive 14:46.28 and setting the stage for her Olympic campaign.
