NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Power has launched a campaign targeting all 7.4 million prepaid meters in its network.
This move is part of a global exercise designed to enhance the functionality and security of meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).
The Standard Transfer Specification (STS) is a universal protocol for transferring tokens to prepaid meters.
The Necessity of the Update
The utility company has emphasized that customers must update their meters by the end of August this year.
Failure to do so will result in the meters no longer accepting new tokens.
“All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens after the deadline date.
Because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully empowered and assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services,” stated Dr. Joseph Siror, Kenya Power Chief Executive Officer.
Update Token Meter Yako: Simplifying the Process
To ensure a smooth transition, Kenya Power has introduced a campaign dubbed ‘Update Token Meter Yako’.
Customers purchasing tokens will receive two codes from Kenya Power, which must be entered into their meters following the instructions provided via SMS before loading new tokens.
Additionally, for those who haven’t purchased tokens, the company will proactively send the necessary codes, making the update process straightforward and free.
This method not only ensures compliance but also minimizes disruption. “Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens.
They will be required to key the codes to their meter following the steps indicated in the SMS before loading the new token,” Siror elaborated.
He added, “In other instances, the Company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free.”
Impact on Existing Tokens and Future Preparedness
The update will not affect any tokens already loaded into the meters, providing some reassurance to users.
However, Kenya Power advises customers to load any previously purchased tokens before performing the update to avoid any potential issues.
Through the updates, the company ensures the reliability of its services and the security of its token system.
