NAIROBI, Kenya, July 9– Kenya has taken a step in drone technology and smart innovation following the approval of the Konza National Drone Corridor by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) announced that the corridor, the first of its kind in the country will support Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations in a controlled and secure airspace.
According to the Technopolis, the move marks a transformative moment in Kenya’s unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) ecosystem and strengthens its position as a continental leader in tech innovation.
The corridor is designed to prioritize safety, minimize risks to manned aircraft, protect people and property, and address privacy and environmental concerns.
“This approval is a profound testament to Kenya’s progressive vision of becoming a global leader in smart technology and aviation innovation,” said John Paul Okwiri, CEO of Konza Technopolis.
“The establishment of this drone corridor within a smart city will spur significant economic growth by attracting investment, creating new opportunities, and also firmly position Konza Technopolis as the premier destination for African tech talent and enterprise to thrive.”
The corridor opens access to authorized operators, startups, academic institutions, and industry leaders, offering a collaborative environment to build, refine, and scale drone solutions across agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and emergency response.
“We are incredibly excited to work hand-in-hand with innovators and organizations who share our mission to harness the immense potential of drone technology for positive societal impact,” added Annah Musyimi, Chief Manager, Physical Planning, Design, Compliance, and Environment at KoTDA.
The drone corridor will be overseen by a dedicated Corridor Operations Coordinator to ensure compliance, safety, and operational excellence.
