Nairobi, Kenya – The Milimani Children’s Court has ordered the detention of two teenagers accused of desecrating the Kenyan flag during a football match at Nyayo Stadium.
Senior Principal Magistrate Rose Gitau directed that the minors, aged 14 and 17, be held at the Gigiri Children’s Protection Unit until Wednesday pending further inquiry. The boys face charges of illegal presence in the country, damaging a national symbol, and causing a disturbance.
The court also rejected a bid by relatives to secure their release, insisting that custody remain with authorities until a social inquiry report is filed.
Mogadishu FC swiftly issued an apology, condemning the act and distancing the club from the fans. Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, also denounced the behavior, saying it did not reflect Somalia’s values.
Under the National Flag, Emblems, and Names Act, Cap 99, disrespecting the national flag attracts fines of up to Sh5,000 or imprisonment of up to six months.
The case resumes on Wednesday, when the teenagers are expected to take a plea.
