“Deep Loyalty”: Gideon Moi Pens Emotional Tribute For Cyrus Jirongo After Fatal Crash

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — KANU chairman Gideon Moi has paid tribute to former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a loyal family man, a fearless political actor, and a figure who left a lasting imprint on Kenya’s national discourse.

In a condolence message, Moi said Jirongo’s death was a painful loss to family, friends, and the country, noting that those who knew him closely encountered not only a confident politician but a deeply committed family man.

“Hon. Jirongo was known to us first as a family man,” Moi said. “He spoke with pride about his family, and he carried that sense of responsibility into every space he entered.”

Moi recalled Jirongo’s warmth, humour, and confidence, saying these personal traits were matched by deep loyalty to those closest to him. He noted that their interactions over the years were marked by openness and mutual respect, even when views sharply differed.

“He was bold in thought and action. He spoke his mind freely and engaged others openly,” Moi said. “Our conversations were honest, sometimes even challenging, but always rooted in mutual respect.”

Politically, Moi said Jirongo played a visible and influential role, particularly during the final years of KANU’s tenure as the ruling party. He described him as energetic and unapologetic, a leader whose passion ensured he remained a prominent figure in public debate regardless of political alignment.

“As a political figure, he played a visible and influential role in the country’s public life,” Moi said. “Whether one agreed with him or not, he brought passion to politics and left a clear mark on the national conversation.”

Jirongo rose to national prominence in the 1990s as a powerful mobiliser within KANU before later charting an independent political path. His career, defined by ambition and outspoken positions, saw him both wield significant influence and attract controversy, particularly as Kenya transitioned into a multiparty democracy.

Moi conveyed condolences on behalf of the Moi family and the Kenya African National Union, extending sympathies to Jirongo’s family, friends, and supporters across the country.

“On behalf of the Moi family and KANU, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him,” he said, adding a prayer for strength and peace for those mourning.

Jirongo’s death has triggered a steady stream of tributes from across the political spectrum, with leaders reflecting on his courage, candour, and ability to challenge authority without retreat. His passing also comes amid renewed concern over road safety on major highways, following a series of fatal accidents in recent months.

“May God’s strength, grace, and peace be with them during this sorrowful time,” Moi said. “May the soul of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo rest in eternal peace.”
