NEW DELHI, India – Kenyan volleyball coach Dennis Mwanzo, who was bitten by a stray dog while on assignment in India, is now in stable condition following post-exposure treatment, doctors have confirmed.
According to Dr. Ramesh Kumar of the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, Mwanzo and Japanese coach Mieko Okumatsu were immediately administered anti-rabies and tetanus vaccinations after the attack.
Both sustained minor injuries and are expected to make full recoveries.
The two were ambushed by stray dogs while returning to their accommodation from a late training session. Local authorities have since captured the animals, with the Chennai Municipal Corporation pledging tighter control measures amid rising cases of dog bites in the region.
Kenya’s Ministry of Sports and the Volleyball Federation of Kenya (VFK) have been in close contact with Indian officials.
“We are grateful for the swift medical response and the safety assurances given by our hosts,” VFK President Charles Nyaberi said.
Mwanzo, who coaches Kenya’s under-21 volleyball team, is part of a contingent attending a joint Kenya-India youth sports exchange program.
Doctors say he will remain under observation for 48 hours before being discharged.
