Farmers to Receive Over 1 Million Bags of Subsidized Fertilizer After Supply Chain Disruption

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has announced that the distribution of over 1 million bags of subsidized fertilizer will resume on Monday, March 24, following a brief supply chain disruption.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe made the announcement on Saturday, assuring farmers that logistical challenges have been resolved.

The disruption had left farmers unable to redeem e-voucher messages for fertilizers at National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots over the past two days.

However, Kagwe reassured farmers that measures have been implemented to stabilize the supply and ensure timely planting.

“We are aware that farmers faced difficulties redeeming their e-vouchers due to logistical challenges,” said Kagwe. “Despite this setback, issuance remained stable, and we have now addressed these challenges to ensure smooth operations from Monday.”

To accelerate distribution, the government has deployed train wagons to transport fertilizer from the Mombasa port.

The first shipment is expected to arrive at the Naivasha inland port by Sunday morning.

Additionally, 1,380 metric tons of fertilizer are en route to Mombasa to replenish supplies.

Kagwe emphasized the importance of maintaining high morale among farmers, particularly as the planting season begins.

“The onset of the rains has heightened demand for fertilizers, and we are working overnight to ensure all farmers can plant within the recommended timeframe,” he stated. “The supply of fertilizer is sufficient, and contracted suppliers through NCPB have been instructed to increase deliveries to meet the demand.”

The Ministry of Agriculture has reported record-high interest from farmers, with NCPB depots reaching full capacity since December 2024.

According to Kagwe, this surge in demand has prompted swift replenishment efforts, with suppliers instructed to resume deliveries immediately.

“The high demand works in our favor as it creates space in our depots,” said Kagwe. “We expect all stores to be fully replenished by next week, ensuring farmers can access the inputs they need.”

In addition to addressing logistical challenges, Kagwe issued a stern warning to farmers about counterfeit products.

He urged farmers to purchase fertilizers only from registered distributors and NCPB outlets to avoid falling victim to criminals selling substandard products.

“We urge our farmers to remain vigilant and avoid buying fertilizers from unregistered sources,” Kagwe cautioned. “The Anti-Counterfeit Authority’s efforts to crack down on such activities are commendable and will continue to protect farmers.”

The government’s swift action to resolve supply chain issues comes as part of its commitment to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.

Farmers are encouraged to redeem their e-vouchers starting Monday and take advantage of the subsidized fertilizer to ensure a successful planting season.
