NAIROBI, Kenya – Motorists can now apply for or upgrade to the new generation Smart Driving Licence at 15 Huduma Centres across the country, the government has announced.
The rollout, a partnership between Huduma Kenya and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), is expected to ease access to the modern biometric licences and reduce the need for long-distance travel.
In Nairobi, the service is available at the Huduma Centres located at the General Post Office (GPO) and Kibra.
Other participating centres include Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Garissa, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Kakamega, Eldoret, Thika, Kericho, Nakuru and Kisii.
The Smart Driving Licence comes in card format and carries enhanced security features, including a microchip with biometric data, a digital photograph, signature, driver class and record of traffic offences.
It replaces the old red booklet licences and integrates with NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) for easier verification by law enforcement and other agencies.
To apply, motorists must log into the NTSA TIMS portal using their National ID, KRA PIN and phone number, then select the application or renewal option and pay the processing fee of Sh3,050.
Applicants can then book a biometric appointment at their preferred Huduma Centre.
During the appointment, NTSA officials capture fingerprints, a digital photograph, signature and other details. Applicants receive an SMS notification once the licence is ready for collection.
The licence is valid for three years, with renewal costing the same Sh3,050.
Authorities advised motorists to ensure their TIMS accounts are active and documents are in order before booking an appointment, noting that biometric services are only available at the selected Huduma Centres.
