The move follows Gachagua’s complaints last week, claiming his life was at risk after all official security arrangements were removed from his residence in Karen and Nyeri.
According to Kiambu Senator Karugo Thangwa, Gachagua has now regained two official bodyguards from the General Service Unit (GSU) as well as police personnel stationed at his Karen residence.
Two official government vehicles, confiscated following his ouster, have also been returned.
Thangwa, an outspoken supporter of Gachagua, acknowledged the government’s actions as a positive step but urged for further measures to reinstate his full office resources and staff.
“The state has reinstated part of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s security detail,” Thangwa confirmed on Sunday. “In the same spirit, I urge the government to take the next honourable step and reinstate his employees as well. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.”
Gachagua attended a church service on Sunday at St. James ACK Cathedral in Kiambu, accompanied by the newly reassigned bodyguards.
In a brief address, he expressed gratitude for the support of his constituents, hinting at unresolved grievances within the political landscape of the Mount Kenya region.
“Mt Kenya forgives, but it does not forget,” Gachagua remarked. “I have heard people saying that by 2027, everything will be forgotten. The pain we suffered remains with us. When the time is right, we will address it, but for now, we remain silent.”
The former Deputy President, who insists on his legitimacy in office under a recent court stay order, has vowed to challenge the Senate’s decision in court.
His impeachment on October 17 followed a Senate vote that upheld five of the eleven charges brought against him, citing allegations ranging from constitutional breaches to misuse of office.
Gachagua’s legal team plans to file for a second hearing before the Senate to contest the charges.
In an earlier statement, Gachagua accused the government of targeting his office to “cripple the Deputy President’s operations.”
He alleged that his entire security detail was removed, his staff disarmed, and official vehicles seized.
“I don’t understand this level of viciousness toward a man who helped you become president,” he stated, hinting at the tensions persisting within the administration.
