Galana-Kulalu Bridge Nears Completion, Set to Boost Farm Transport in Coastal Region

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Significant progress has been made on the 200-metre Galana-Kulalu Bridge, a key infrastructure project linking Kilifi and Tana River counties, with construction now reported to be 90% complete.

In a recent update, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that work is currently focused on the bridge deck, with about 120 workers regularly on site, underscoring the project’s contribution to local employment.

Once finished, the bridge will cross the Galana River and provide a direct link between the Galana–Kulalu Food Security Project and the Malindi–Sala Gate Road.

This connection is expected to streamline the transport of agricultural inputs and harvested produce, eliminating lengthy detours previously taken via the Baricho bridge and easing major transport bottlenecks.

Omollo highlighted that the bridge aligns with the broader mandate of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, which has helped coordinate implementation and security oversight—much like the bridge itself, which aims to connect communities to essential services and national development opportunities.

This announcement follows another recent infrastructure update from Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir regarding the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway.

According to Chirchir, construction is actively underway on 25 kilometers of the highway. The China Road and Bridge Corporation is handling two 5-kilometer sections at Rironi and Gilgil, while Shandong Construction Company is working on a 10-kilometer stretch at Kariandusi and a 5-kilometer segment at Mau Summit.

Chirchir noted that additional work sites will be opened as the project progresses and praised contractors for their swift mobilization and pace of work on what he described as a critical infrastructure project.

The Rironi–Mau Summit Highway, launched by President William Ruto in late November 2025, spans 170 kilometers and is being developed through a public-private partnership at an estimated cost of USD 863 million (approximately Sh 170 billion).

The completed highway will include interchanges, truck lay-bys, pedestrian bridges, improved lighting and barriers, drainage systems, and intelligent transport technology to enhance road safety.
