Heavy Rains to Persist in Several Parts of Kenya, Met Department Says

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Several parts of the country will continue receiving rainfall this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said in its latest seven-day forecast covering November 4 to 10.

The department said the rains will persist in the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, the southeastern lowlands, and northeastern Kenya.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain high in parts of the Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya, where maximum temperatures above 30°C are likely.

Some areas in the southeastern lowlands and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley may also experience similar heat.

However, nighttime temperatures are forecast to drop below 10°C in parts of the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and regions near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, mornings will experience sunny intervals with possible isolated showers.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to intensify as the week progresses. Nights will generally be partly cloudy, with occasional showers in some areas.

Northwestern Kenya will remain mostly sunny during the day, though isolated showers could occur later in the week.

The Highlands east of the Rift Valley are expected to experience cloudy mornings with intermittent rainfall.

Northeastern Kenya, the southeastern lowlands, and coastal areas are also likely to receive showers at various times of the day and night, with rainfall expected to spread to more locations toward the end of the week.

A review of the previous week showed widespread rainfall across much of the country, with heavy downpours reported in Machakos, Kitui, Kilifi, Isiolo, and Murang’a counties.

The highest weekly rainfall was recorded at ADC Japata in Trans Nzoia County, which received 184mm, while Kivingoni in Machakos reported 130mm within 24 hours.

The Meteorological Department has urged the public and county governments to stay alert and monitor daily weather updates.

Recent heavy rains have triggered landslides, flash floods, and destruction of property in several regions.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration said on Saturday that the ongoing short rains had caused “tragic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property” in multiple counties.
