NAIROBI, Kenya– The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has raised concern over what it termed as “unacceptable and reckless” statements about alleged election malpractices circulating in the country.
The electoral body in a statement Sunday urged Kenyans to ignore such claims, emphasizing that they are misleading and aimed at sowing distrust in Kenya’s democratic institutions.
“Such utterances are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society such as ours,” read the statement in part.
“The country is not on a campaign period at the moment.”
The Commission explained that while it will establish the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee as provided for under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act, its powers only apply during an official election period.
It cited the Supreme Court judgment in a petition involving nomunated MP Sabina Chege as a precedent clarifying that position.
The IEBC has recently finalized its full reconstitution and said it is committed to initiating dialogue with key stakeholders including political parties and leaders to rebuild trust and restore confidence in the electoral system.
It appealed to political leaders to stop issuing provocative remarks that could undermine public confidence in the Commission’s work, calling instead for collaborative efforts to protect Kenya’s electoral integrity.
Likewise, the Commission reiterated its independence, neutrality, and commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections ahead of the 2027 polls.
