IGAD, AU Heads Welcome Appointment of Sudan’s Civilian Prime Minister: “Forge Peace”

DJIBOUTI, Djibouti – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has welcomed the appointment of Dr. Kamil al-Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan.

Dr. Idris was appointed to his new position by the Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, amidst the ongoing civil war.

In a statement, IGAD said that the Executive Secretary hopes that this appointment will mark a meaningful step toward reviving an inclusive political process.

“Dr. Gebeyehu urges all Sudanese stakeholders to engage in broad-based national consultations aimed at restoring constitutional governance, forging peace, and laying the foundation for a stable and democratic Sudan,” the statement reads in part.

AU welcomes Dr. Idris’ appointment

He also reiterated IGAD’s call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, emphasising that silencing the guns is essential to ending civilian suffering, enabling humanitarian access, and creating an environment conducive to dialogue.

“IGAD remains steadfast in its commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and stability of Sudan and stands ready to support efforts toward a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future,” the statement further reads.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has also taken note of the appointment of Dr. Idris.

In a statement, the chairperson commended the development as a step toward inclusive governance and expressed hope that it will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan.

“Mr. Youssouf urges all Sudanese stakeholders to redouble their efforts toward a peaceful, civilian-led, and inclusive transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people, saying that the Commission remains ready to support Sudan in this regard, in collaboration with regional and international partners,” the statement reads.

Who is Dr. Kamil al-Tayeb Idris

The Chairperson reiterated the African Union’s firm commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Sudan and to the pursuit of a durable political solution that secures peace, development, and democratic governance for all Sudanese.

Dr. Idris, a Sudanese statesman and former diplomat, was born in Omdurman.

He has a background as a scholar and international civil servant, having previously served as the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

His appointment comes as Sudan navigates the complexities of its third year of civil conflict, highlighting the critical role of political leadership during times of crisis.
