Iran Calls for Emergency UN Security Council Meeting on Israeli Aggression

Date:

TEHRAN — Iran has formally called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) following what it described as a “brazen” and “criminal” Israeli military assault on its nuclear facilities and top military officials.

In a letter addressed to the president of the Security Council on Thursday, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN condemned the Israeli strikes as a violation of international law and the UN Charter, calling for decisive international action.

According to Tehran, the attacks—allegedly conducted with U.S. support—targeted peaceful nuclear infrastructure and led to the deaths of several senior Iranian military commanders and scientists.

The assault, described as a “pre-planned” and “coordinated” operation, has escalated tensions across the region.

“This reckless and illegal aggression jeopardizes regional and international peace and security,” Iran’s UN delegation wrote in the letter, urging the Security Council to hold Israel accountable for what it termed “provocative and destabilizing” actions.

Iran also reported significant casualties, including the death of at least six nuclear scientists and several high-ranking officials: Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces; Major General Hossein Salami, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); and Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, head of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters.

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a sharp warning to Israel, vowing retaliation.

“With this crime, the Zionist regime has prepared for itself a bitter, painful fate, which it will definitely see,” he said in a statement.

The strike marks one of the most serious escalations between the two adversaries in recent years, and comes amid already heightened tensions across the Middle East.
