JKUAT’s Amos Muigai Wins Prestigious Bayer Safe Use Ambassador Award

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Amos Muigai, a student of horticulture and food security at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), has been named the 2024 winner of the Bayer East Africa Safe Use Ambassador (SUA) program.

This remarkable achievement comes with an exciting opportunity for Muigai—a fully sponsored educational trip to Bayer Crop Science headquarters in Monheim, Germany, from November 18 to 24, where he will engage with industry experts and fellow winners from around the world.

His passion for advancing the well-being of farming communities and commitment to promoting safe agricultural practices has earned him this esteemed recognition.

But the story doesn’t end there; this award is more than just a personal achievement. It signifies the growing impact of sustainable farming and product stewardship within the agricultural industry.

During his trip to Germany, Muigai will explore Bayer’s extensive operations and safety culture.

The itinerary includes a visit to Bayer AG’s headquarters in Leverkusen, a tour of the “Bayer Forward Farm” in Rommerskirchen, and an educational journey through the vibrant city of Cologne.

This experience will offer him hands-on insights into Bayer’s innovative solutions in crop protection, safety practices, and sustainability.

The Safe Use Ambassador program is part of Bayer’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and safe pesticide usage, a topic that is increasingly critical in today’s farming sector.

The initiative was launched in 2017 and has since expanded to over 50 universities across 15 countries, training more than 11,200 students to become certified Bayer Safe Use Ambassadors.

Muigai’s work with local farming communities in Kenya mirrors Bayer’s commitment to educating future agricultural leaders on the safe use of pesticides and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Joern Kraegeloh, Bayer East Africa Managing Director, praised Muigai for his dedication to promoting safe agricultural practices and sustainability.

“Amos Muigai’s efforts align perfectly with Bayer’s mission of fostering sustainable farming and improving the well-being of farmers. His work is proof that education and awareness can transform communities,” Kraegeloh stated during the award ceremony at JKUAT.

The ceremony was also attended by other notable figures, including Nimrod Lucky, Agronomy Advisory and Stewardship Specialist for Smallholders, and JKUAT’s Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Robert Kinyua.

The program’s impact in Kenya is undeniable. Over 50 students from the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SOAES) were trained on the safe and responsible use of crop protection products, equipping them to share their knowledge with local farmers.

Reflecting on his win, Muigai expressed both excitement and humility. “Being named the Bayer SUA 2024 winner is a truly memorable moment. I’m eager to expand my skills, build new networks, and contribute to sustainable agriculture.”

“This experience will not only enhance my career prospects but also empower me to continue advocating for responsible farming practices that protect both people and the environment,” Muigai added.
