- Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirms Kilifi Bridge is structurally sound.
- Viral AI-generated image showing severe damage to the bridge is false.
- Public urged to rely on verified KeNHA channels for road safety updates.
NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public alert dismissing viral social media images depicting severe structural damage to the Kilifi Bridge as AI-generated fabrications.
The misleading image, which circulated over the weekend, appeared to show deep cracks on the bridge’s underbelly, causing concern among commuters and residents who rely on the bridge as a vital link between Mombasa and Kilifi.
Authority Confirms Bridge Is Safe
KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli reassured the public that the Kilifi Bridge is safe and fully operational.
“The Authority wishes to assure the public that it conducts continuous inspections of its infrastructure to ensure structural integrity and safety. The image in circulation is fabricated and does not reflect the actual condition of the Kilifi Bridge,” the notice stated.
KeNHA engineers physically inspected the site following the viral reports and found no evidence of the alleged damage.
Rising Challenge of AI Misinformation
The incident underscores the growing threat of AI-generated misinformation affecting public perception and safety. The hoax coincided with heavy rainfall in parts of the country, which may have contributed to the belief that the bridge had sustained environmental damage.
Local Kilifi County authorities also confirmed the bridge remains “intact, safe, and fully operational,” urging residents to ignore the malicious content.
Verified Channels for Road Updates
KeNHA emphasized the importance of sharing only verified information to prevent public panic. Citizens are encouraged to confirm road conditions through official channels:
- Toll-Free Number: 0800 211244
- X (Twitter): @KeNHAKenya
- Website: www.kenha.co.ke
The Authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all national road infrastructure through regular inspections and maintenance programs.
