Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains and Temperature Drop Across Several Regions

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory warning Kenyans in several parts of the country to brace for moderate to heavy rains beginning Friday, November 7, 2025, through the weekend.

According to the department’s weekend weather outlook, the rains will affect a wide range of regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coastal region, and the South-Eastern lowlands.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, showers are expected in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties. The department said rainfall will mainly occur in the afternoon and evening after sunny or cloudy mornings.

The Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley counties expected to experience similar weather patterns include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

In the South-Eastern lowlands, rain is forecast in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland areas of Tana River County.

The warning comes amid ongoing heavy rains in parts of the country, which have already caused flooding, mudslides, and fatalities. Last week, at least 35 people died and several others were injured following a landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, according to county disaster officials.

Temperature Advisory
KMD further cautioned that nighttime temperatures are expected to drop sharply in several regions, especially in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where the mercury could fall to 7°C between Friday and Sunday, before gradually rising to around 10°C by Tuesday next week.

The affected counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Meanwhile, residents in the Coastal and Northern regions — including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo — should prepare for hot daytime temperatures of up to 37°C.

The department urged residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to exercise caution, avoid crossing flooded roads, and follow guidance from county disaster management teams.

“We advise Kenyans to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period, as localized flooding and cold conditions are expected in parts of the country,” the advisory read in part.

The ongoing rains are part of the short-rains season that typically peaks between October and December, with climate experts warning that El Niño–related conditions could intensify rainfall in several regions.
