Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai Shreds Governor Johnson Sakaja for ‘Intimidating’ Kenya Power: “Unprofessional and Unethical”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Outspoken Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has called out the Nairobi City County government on what he termed terrorizing Kenya Power.

Nairobi City County and Kenya Power have recently been at loggerheads over unpaid electricity bills and regulatory requirements about wayleave costs.

With KPLC seeking legal redress and the county government’s responsibilities being controversial, the tension has escalated as the two sides have argued over these long-standing concerns.

However, Alai has strongly called out the actions taken by the Governor Johnson Sakaja-led administration against Kenya Power.

“The dumping of garbage, disconnection of water and sewer services, clamping and towing of vehicles, and the harassment of staff at Stima Plaza are not only unprofessional and unethical but also constitute gross abuse of power and authority,” said Alai.

Why the actions by the Nairobi City County are disastrous

In a statement to newsrooms seen by Y News, Alai stated that these actions, allegedly sanctioned by the County Secretary, Akumali, and the County Executive Committee member in charge of Finance, Charles Kerich, under the directive of the governor, amount to “institutional terrorism.”

“It is disheartening that public officials entrusted with power and responsibility have chosen to use it in such a reckless and punitive manner. These events set a dangerous precedent. If this kind of institutional terrorism is condoned, then what would stop other key service providers from acting in similar ways?” posed Alai.

Alai observed that such actions would plunge society into chaos and anarchy, undermining the very fabric of law and order that holds our nation together.

“Institutions entrusted with public service and authority must act with utmost responsibility, respect for the rule of law, and ethical conduct,” explained Alai, calling upon President William Ruto to intervene urgently in the matter.

Alai reiterated that the county officials had displayed conduct unbecoming of public officers, and their actions had compromised the integrity of public office.

“Such behaviour is not only an embarrassment to the county government but also a threat to the stability of governance and public trust,” Alai further said.

What MCA Robert Alai wants done to address the stalemate

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MCA demanded immediate disciplinary action against all individuals involved, including county staff and police officers who escorted and provided protection for the unlawful acts.

“Furthermore, I call upon the Kenya Police Service and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to explain why no action has been taken against those who violated the law. The public deserves transparency and accountability from these institutions,” he said.

The first term MCA said there was a need for public institutions to resolve disputes through legal channels and respectful engagements, not through intimidation, abuse of power, or acts of terror.

“The Nairobi City County leadership must exhibit better behaviour and professionalism in its engagements with other institutions and the public at large. We must safeguard our democracy, uphold the rule of law, and maintain public trust in governance,” he explained.

Earlier, Y News reported that the electricity distributor is headed into a collision with the devolved unit after law enforcement officers, better known as kanjos, dumped garbage outside Stima Plaza.

The tussle stems from a Sh 3 billion electricity bill that the county government owes the power utility firm
