NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju was arrested on Monday afternoon shortly after reappearing in public following his mysterious disappearance, triggering new controversy and legal confrontation.
Tuju had been reported missing by his family after hours of unexplained absence, with his vehicle found abandoned in Karen amid claims he was being trailed by unmarked vehicles.
According to his legal team, Tuju presented himself at Karen Police Station to record a statement about the ordeal that forced him into hiding.
But before he could be officially entered into the station’s occurrence book, lawyers say police officers forcibly put him into a Subaru, which they allege was used to take him into custody instead of following due process.
Lawyers at the scene described a confrontation between Tuju’s legal representatives and officers, saying that Tuju suffered a back injury in the process and required medical attention.
“That was not pushing him or roughing him up; that was serious violence,” one lawyer said, while urging authorities to clarify the grounds for the arrest.
The crowded scene at the police station drew onlookers and sparked heightened tensions, with legal teams demanding information on the specific charges Tuju was facing.
A source familiar with the matter told Y News that Tuju could be charged with giving false information, but official confirmation is still pending.
DCI boss Mohamed Amin is set to issue a statement on Monday afternoon over the drama.
