MACHAKOS, Kenya — Detectives based in Konza have foiled a daring daylight robbery attempt in Machakos County, arresting two suspects after a victim was briefly dragged by a vehicle during a struggle over his mobile phone.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. in Kimutwa village when a Toyota Fielder, registration number KDS 457A, stopped outside a resident’s plot.
Two occupants reportedly beckoned the victim, claiming they were selling various items.
The passenger began scrolling through images on his phone, allegedly showcasing goods for sale.
Moments later, the driver requested the victim’s phone under the pretext of saving his contact.
The victim declined after sensing danger, but the driver forcefully grabbed the device.
In a dramatic turn, the victim lunged halfway into the vehicle in a bid to recover his phone.
The suspects then sped off, dragging him along.
During the struggle, the victim managed to grab the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and stop abruptly.
Realizing the plan had failed, the two suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
The victim raised an alarm, attracting members of the public who alerted police officers from Konza Police Station who were on patrol near Kwa-Mwau Trading Centre.
Officers launched a swift pursuit and arrested the suspects shortly afterward.
They were taken to Konza Police Station, where they remain in custody pending processing and arraignment.
Police later revisited the scene and recovered the vehicle used in the attempted robbery.
Detectives also discovered a second registration plate, KDV 495X, concealed inside the car’s bonnet, raising suspicion that the vehicle may have been used in other criminal activities.
The DCI said the incident highlights the importance of vigilance and public cooperation in preventing crime.
Authorities urged members of the public to remain cautious when approached by strangers offering goods, particularly in isolated areas.
The suspects are expected to be charged once investigations are complete.
