MERU, Kenya — Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has officially declared his candidature for the Meru governorship in 2027, promising to restore what he described as the county’s “lost glory” and reposition it as a political and economic powerhouse.
“I, Mithika Linturi, have officially declared my candidature for the Meru governorship with a clear and unwavering mission: to restore Meru’s lost glory and return our county to its rightful place,” Linturi said in a statement.
The former Igembe South MP and Meru Senator said he made the decision after “deep reflection and wide consultations” with residents. He accused the current county leadership of weak governance, arguing that Meru has lost its influence at the national level.
“Meru has lost its voice at the national table, our farmers are struggling, our professionals are sidelined, and our youth are disillusioned. This must change,” he said.

Leadership Experience
Linturi cited his more than 15 years in national leadership, having served as Member of Parliament for 10 years, Senator for five years, and later as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.
“I understand legislation, policy, budgeting, and administration. I know how government works, and I know how to negotiate for resources and defend the interests of our people,” he said.
He also referenced his recent recognition as Ameru spokesman by the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility.
Agriculture-Centred Agenda
Linturi outlined agriculture as the cornerstone of his campaign, pledging to reposition Meru as Kenya’s food basket through cooperative reforms and modernisation of farming systems.
“As governor, I will strengthen farmer cooperatives and modernise agriculture. Through organised and accountable societies, we will provide subsidised quality seeds and fertiliser, improve extension services, expand irrigation and secure better markets,” he said.
He pointed to his tenure at the Agriculture Ministry, claiming tea farmers earned record bonuses and that farmer registration enabled targeted government interventions to address food costs.
“Our farmers are hardworking and entrepreneurial. What we lack is bold leadership that can organise, protect and expand these strengths,” he said.

Political Undertones
In a thinly veiled critique of local leaders aligned with the national government, Linturi said Meru should not “beg for development.”
“Meru contributed overwhelmingly to this administration, and our people deserve respect and tangible returns in terms of development and opportunities,” he said. “We must never beg for development as we are being made to believe.”
He called for a “fresh, competent and courageous team” to restore accountability in county government, empower youth and professionals, and defend local economic interests.
2027 Race Takes Shape
The announcement signals an early start to what is expected to be a competitive 2027 gubernatorial contest in Meru, a county with significant political influence in the Mt. Kenya region.
“In 2027, I ask the people of Meru to choose courage over complacency, unity over division, and progress over stagnation,” Linturi said.
“Together, we will restore Meru’s pride, prosperity, and its standing in the national arena.”
