Moi University Lecturers Reject Return-to-Work Offer, Demand CBA Compliance

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya – Lecturers at Moi University in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, have rejected an offer from the university council, insisting that the package falls short of their demands.

The dons, who downed their tools on August 20, said the industrial action will continue until all their grievances are addressed.

Addressing the press on Monday, Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) Eldoret branch secretary-general, Dr. Busolo Wekesa, said members had reviewed the offer but found it inadequate.

“We have received the offers and are deliberating with the employer, but so far the staff have said that it is too little and they will not accept it unless they are offered something better,” Dr. Wekesa said.

UASU branch chairman, Richard Kero, said lecturers felt betrayed after working overtime to recover lost learning time following last year’s strike.

“Some of our members are suffering due to the burden of loans that have seen them placed on the CRB list, as many go home without a pension,” Kero said.

The union accuses the university of failing to honour a return-to-work formula signed on November 30, 2024.

Among their demands are the payment of June and July 2025 salaries in line with the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), as well as implementation of clauses on staff promotions, reviews, and retirement age.

Moi University, which has struggled with financial and management crises in recent years, had its council dissolved by the government in January and replaced with a new team to try and restore stability.

Despite this, the institution has continued to face labour unrest, with lecturers warning they will not resume classes until their demands are met.
