NAIROBI, Kenya- In a bold move to tackle environmental pollution, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has issued a stern warning to polluters: Clean up your act or face legal consequences.
She was speaking at the Athi River Chief’s camp, when she launched a countywide clean-up initiative dubbed ‘Ng’arisha Mtaa na Governor Wavinya’.
Her statement signals a zero-tolerance policy towards littering and improper waste disposal.
Governor Ndeti made it clear that her administration has adopted a zero-waste principle for both solid and sewage waste management.
“Heavy penalties will be meted out on those who deliberately litter the environment,” she asserted, emphasizing the county’s commitment to strict enforcement of environmental regulations.
This initiative is not just about penalties; it’s about fostering a culture of cleanliness and responsibility among residents and businesses alike.
Cracking Down on Illegal Sewage Disposal
A significant part of the governor’s address focused on the critical issue of sewage disposal.
She cautioned developers against discharging raw sewage into rivers and other undesignated areas, highlighting the severe health risks to residents.
“Those who have built residential flats and industries must ensure they are connected to an authorized sewer line. Violators will be arrested and prosecuted without negotiation,” warned Governor Ndeti.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort to safeguard public health and ensure that the region’s natural resources are protected from harmful pollutants.
The governor’s message was clear: environmental sustainability is non-negotiable.
Empowering Women and Youth Through Clean-Up Jobs
The ‘Ng’arisha Mtaa na Governor Wavinya’ program is set to make a significant impact on the community by creating immediate employment opportunities.
The initiative, managed by the County Department of Lands, Urban Development, Housing, and Energy, will employ 3,000 women and youth in a phased arrangement, offering a daily stipend of Ksh 672.
This not only helps in maintaining cleanliness but also provides much-needed jobs to the local community.
Governor Ndeti highlighted the logistical and technical support from the municipalities of Mavoko, Machakos, and Kangundo/Tala, which will be crucial in executing the program.
