NAIROBI, Kenya — Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has paid tribute to the late former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as an astute and courageous leader who consistently spoke uncomfortable truths to those in power.
In a statement, the ODM lawmaker said he had woken up to the sad news of Jirongo’s death in a road accident, terming it a painful loss to the country and to those who knew him personally.
“I was going to type happy birthday to me; then I woke up to sad news of the loss of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo through a terrible road accident,” Amisi said. “A very good man by heart, an astute long-time politician who told the government the uncomfortable truth.”
Amisi eulogised Jirongo as a generous and widely loved figure whose influence extended beyond party lines, noting that his candour and independence set him apart in Kenya’s often rigid political landscape.
“He was loved by most of his friends and generous to the core,” the MP said.
As a mark of respect, Amisi announced that he would not hold any celebrations for his birthday, saying the moment called for reflection rather than personal festivities.
“In his respect therefore, I will not hold any form of celebration for my birthday today,” he added.
Jirongo, a prominent figure in Kenya’s multiparty politics, built a reputation as a fearless and outspoken leader, at times openly challenging successive governments.

His political career saw him wield significant influence in Western Kenya, where he remained a notable voice even outside elective office.
Amisi concluded his message with a broader reflection on the state of the country, calling for renewed national introspection.
“May the good Lord rest his soul in eternal peace,” he said, adding: “Kenya needs a renaissance!”
Jirongo’s death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from across the political divide, with leaders hailing his legacy as one defined by boldness, generosity and an unwavering willingness to question authority.
