Plea-Taking for Officers in Baby Pendo Case Postponed

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The plea-taking of 12 police officers accused of murdering Baby Samantha Pendo during the 2017 post-election violence in Kisumu has been postponed by the High Court in Nairobi.

The plea-taking was initially scheduled for January 15, 2025, but has been postponed to January 29, 2025.

The officers facing murder charges include Titus Yoma, Titus Mutune, John Chengo Masha, Linah Kogey, Benjamin Kipkokei Koima, Benjamin Lorima, Volker Edambo, Cyprine Robi Wankio, Josphat Sensira, Mohamed Ali Guyo, Mohammed Baa, and James Rono.

Hon. Justice K. Kimondo ordered the matter to be postponed to allow a smooth transition and reassignment of the case from Lady Justice L. Mutende, who was transferred to Nyahururu High Court, to Lady Justice M. Muigai.

According to the senior assistant director of public prosecutions, Mr. Vincent Monda, the court’s decision was justified as it would allow proper transition and progression of the case and ensure justice was served to the victims and their families.

The plea-taking will now proceed under Lady Justice M. Muigai.

Baby Pendo’s case reminds many Kenyans of the devastating impact of excessive use of force by police officers, especially during protests.
