Raila to Participate in Televised Debate Against Other AUC Chair Candidates

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Next week, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga will face a crucial test in his bid to become the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

In a live televised debate at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Odinga will present his vision for the continent, competing against Mohamed Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randrianmandrato of Madagascar.

The debate, dubbed “Mjadala Africa,” is scheduled for December 13, 2024.

The spotlight will also be on Mauritius, where political dynamics could influence the race.

Despite Mauritius having its own candidate, Anil Gayan, the nation’s newly re-elected Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, has endorsed Raila, adding an intriguing twist to the contest.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi expressed confidence in Raila’s ability to deliver a compelling performance during the debate.

According to Mudavadi, the platform offers an opportunity for the former prime minister to articulate how he plans to lead Africa into the next era of progress by implementing the AU Mandate and advancing Agenda 2063—a blueprint for Africa’s sustainable development.

“We believe Raila Odinga will present a clear vision for Africa’s transformation,” Mudavadi remarked. “His credentials as a pan-African leader uniquely position him to unite the continent and drive forward key initiatives in peace, development, and economic growth.”

The live event also provides an avenue for African citizens and stakeholders to interact directly with the candidates, ensuring that pressing concerns from across the continent take center stage.

Odinga’s candidacy has garnered attention for his extensive political experience and unwavering commitment to African unity.

Having played pivotal roles in Kenya’s governance and international diplomacy, his supporters argue that he represents more than just Kenya’s interests.

Mudavadi highlighted this point, stating, “Raila’s leadership experience and pan-African outlook make him a natural choice to succeed Chad’s Moussa Faki as the next AUC Chair. His election would signal a commitment to shared prosperity and stability across Africa.”

With the debate just days away and elections slated for February 2025, Raila faces a critical moment to solidify his bid for one of Africa’s most influential positions.

His supporters are optimistic that his ability to connect with both leaders and citizens across the continent will make a lasting impression during the debate.
