NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a resilient leader, accomplished businessman, and a politician who left a lasting mark on Kenya’s political landscape.
In a condolence message shared on Saturday, the President said Jirongo was a close friend whose life and career were defined by determination, courage, and an unyielding spirit in the face of adversity.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo,” Ruto said. “Jirongo was a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined, let alone defeated, by life’s challenges.”
The Head of State described the late former MP as a fighter in every sense, blending bluntness with warmth and boldness with approachability. He noted that Jirongo’s intellectual curiosity and entrepreneurial drive set him apart in both business and politics.
“He was a fighter in every sense: blunt yet warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened and endlessly entrepreneurial,” the President said.
Ruto also paid tribute to Jirongo’s generosity, saying he was known for supporting others with his time, resources, and personal encouragement.
“Above all, he was generous to a fault; always willing to give, to uplift, and to back others with his time, resources, and belief,” he said.
Jirongo, a key figure in Kenya’s politics during the late 1990s and 2000s, served as Lugari MP for two terms and previously held ministerial positions under the late President Daniel arap Moi. Over the years, he built a reputation as an outspoken and independent-minded politician, unafraid to take controversial positions.
Ruto said Jirongo never shied away from difficult decisions or ambitious ideas, choosing instead to live life on his own terms.

“Never one to shrink from a tough stand or a grand idea, he lived on his own terms and left an indelible mark on our political landscape,” the President said.
He extended condolences to Jirongo’s family and friends, assuring them of his prayers during the period of mourning.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” Ruto said. “Rest in peace, my friend.”
Jirongo’s death in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway has prompted an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the political divide, reflecting his enduring influence and complex legacy in Kenya’s public life.
